Minister’s Message 14 December

12 Dec 2025

Dear Friends

At this time of year it can be very easy to get totally carried away in the rush to get things done that we lose the experience of just 'being'.

Advent is supposed to be a time of waiting and expectancy but most of us prefer to rush on. I hope that our Sunday services during Advent give us some space to be still and reflect on what it is that we will be celebrating when we finally reach Christmas and hear the familiar story read again.

In my own reflections this Advent I have been spending time pondering some words of Martin Luther translated into Scots in the 16th century. It is a prayer asking Jesus to make us ready for Him to make a home in our hearts and it takes the form of a lullaby - the Scots word 'balulalow'.

''O my deir hert, young Jesus sweit,
Prepair a credill in my spreit.
And I sall rock Thee in my heart
And never mair from Thee depart.
But I sall praise Thee evermoir
With sangis sweet unto Thy gloir.
The kneis of my hert sall I bow
And sing that rycht Balulalow.''

If it's possible for you this week, take some time to be still and wait for the Lord and make some room in your heart to receive the Christ Child. Let me recommend to you either Compline on Thursday night or the Carol Concert on Friday evening in the church.

May hope, peace and joy be yours in these days.
In Christ,

Alan
