HYMNS WITH A SPECIAL CONNECTION TO THE LOCH LEVEN AREA
 

On 25th January 2011 at a Guild meeting,  11 hymns were sung by those attending which were all by authors/composers connected with Loch Leven. Keith Green was at the piano, and a small choir led the event. The following is a list of the hymns:

Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in Light inaccessible, hid from our eyes

Rev. Walter Chalmers Smith (1824-1908)

1853-58 Minister of Free Church, Milnathort, during which time he composed this hymn, before moving to England and then back to Edinburgh where he became Moderator of Free Church in its Jubilee Year

Psalm 63 – Oh Lord, my God, I long for you, My heart and flesh cry out. I need to know you through and through, Be done with sin and doubt

Rev Ian Cowie (1923-2005)

Ian retired to Kinross in 1990, having been leader of the Christian Fellowship of Healing in Edinburgh. He had been a Parish Minister in Tullibody and Rosyth, and then part of a new team ministry in Craigmillar before this. The tune is Kilmarnock

O God of Bethel, by whose hand, thy people still are fed

Michael Bruce (1746-67), the Gentle Poet of Loch Leven

Though Michael Bruce is well known for his paraphrases, of which this is one of the best known, he was a brilliant scholar and nature poet, who made his mark in his 21 years

Lifted high on your cross, drawing all folk

Ian Cowie

This one is to be found in CH4 and is set to the piping tune Pulling Bracken

Jesus Christ loves light not darkness, Don’t conceal the faith you own

Ruary MacLeod

Ruary retired  to a lovely view of Loch Leven. He is an elder of Orwell Kirk and together with Rosemary Tolson has produced several hymns

Jesus tender shepherd, hear me, Bless thy little lamb tonight, Through the darkness be Thou near me; Watch my sleep till morning light

Mary Lundie Duncan (1814-40)

Mary was the daughter of the manse in Kelso, and married Rev WW Duncan, the Cleish minister. She had 2 children and wrote music as well as hymns and poetry

Ruary MacLeod

The message of this hymn is Whatever lies before me, with Jesus I shall go. We sang it to the tune of John Anderson my jo

O come and praise the Lord, praise His name

Ian Cowie

This hymn is designed to be sung to the lusty tune Ye Jacobites, by name

Ps 148 Praise the Lord from the heav’ns, Praise Him in the heights

Stephen and Sandra Miller

This hymn was written in 2000, in response to a challenge from the pulpit – to write a modern psalm which could be sung by the congregation

Each blade of grass beneath your feet, the mind of God enfolds completely

Roddy Cowie

This hymn writer has slight connections with Kinross,(son of Ian Cowie,) but the tune was written by Rev John Munro who was then minister of Kinross Parish Church

We claim the power of the risen Son, the Life fresh flowing from the living God

Ailsa Cowie

This is to be sung to the powerful tune Woodlands, and is a hymn of Christian Unity by Ian Cowie’s wife
